fire in East Providence fire station
04/22/08 @ 09:29:44 pm, Categories: News, 138 words   English (US)

While typing the post on the brush fires, I hear East Providence, RI fire station 3 on North Broadway call on the air that their fire station was on fire!

I couldn’t believe what I heard! I locked it on that channel. monitored and sure enough, someone threw a Molotov cocktail thru their window, igniting their hallway on fire!!

This firehouse is new and had sprinkler system which probably saved the building. Nobody was injured. The fire was knocked down quickly by the sprinkler system. The police are posting officers at each of their 4 firehouses in case there is an attempt to repeat the act.

What kind of person in the right mind would so something like that?

That goes to show that nobody is safe anymore. Even the people who are out there to protect you need protection!!

Very busy brush fire season
04/22/08 @ 08:55:26 pm, Categories: News, 188 words   English (US)

This year has been extremely busy with brush fires. This weekend alone, there was over 300 brush fires that burned 200+ acres in Massachusetts. As of yet there hasn’t been serious injuries or houses burned, only a shed was destroyed by a 25 acre brush fire in Upon last week.

This week has maintained a steady pace with brush fires with no let up in sight. Today, the largest fire was again in the Douglas State Forest. It burned over 25 acres and was the 2nd major fire in the forest this week. Over the weekend, a fire in the forest destroyed over 40 acres. Mutual aid was required for both fires from multiple departments in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Even though we had a very wet start to the spring, the topsoil has dried out from the warm and windy temperatures making a perfect recipe for a good brush fire.

I’ve yet to shoot a good brush fire this season because they seem to happen in places i’m not near or could not get to in time.
The way its going though, I may end up shooting some big ones eventually.

Dangers of window treatments
04/10/08 @ 08:32:08 am, Categories: News, 78 words   English (US)

Although most of us are safety conscious, there are dangers in your home that you may not think of. One of them are window treatments, specifically blinds.

Recently, a friend asked me to post a blog about the dangers of blinds because her friends 1 year old child was strangled by the cord of Roman Shades.

To help prevent this tragedy from striking another family, please visit this website and pass it along.

When is this going to stop?
04/06/08 @ 12:08:47 pm, Categories: News, 135 words   English (US)

This week, I paid the following:
$3.15 per gallon of gas for a total of $42.00 to fill up
$3.89 per gallon of oil for a total bill of $800
$149.00 for groceries that normally would run me around $100
Increase of $100 on my tax bill for a total of $949

I, like everyone else, have had it with the price of everything skyrocketing. I have lowered my thermostat to 60, driven only when I have to, bought only essentials at the store and basically have done everything else possible to try and keep money in my bank account.

Yet, the oil and gas companies are reporting record profits in the billions!!

What else can I possible do to try and save money? Sell my house? My truck? Not go out and have a limited social life?

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO END???

busy start to April
04/03/08 @ 11:14:48 pm, Categories: News, 253 words   English (US)

Its been a busy start to the month of April. Since April 1st, i’ve been to 8 structure fires including 3 tonight, but only shot 4 of them. I may use the 4 that I did shoot for my “short clip” section of my videos because I arrived late to all of them and only caught smoke and very little flame.I seem to be in the “late arrival” mode  . It goes in cycles. Either your lucky and get great footage with lots of flames and action or your in a slump arriving late or missing incidents completely.

There were many more I was on my way to but turned back because the fire was out and I was still far away or traffic was so bad that I decided it would take too long to continue. The fires have been in the Milford, Worcester, Providence, Fall River and New Bedford areas. Tonight’s fire in Woonsocket was the closest to my home but ofcourse I was in Providence, coming back from the fire in New Bedford when it came in. Again, late to the scene and didn’t get anything good.

There have been several in the Boston area but none big enough to warrant the 40 minute trip.

Hopefully my cycle changes soon.

If anybody has questions, comments or ideas feel free to add them to the comment section. I like to make every volume different so your ideas are welcomed! I’m always ready to listen to ideas that can make my already great volumes even better.

New WFD fireground Frequency
02/19/08 @ 03:23:06 pm, Categories: News, 113 words   English (US)

Yesterday, February 18, the Woonsocket RI Fire Dept switched to their new frequency 155.7675 pl 136.5. For older scanners, you may have to program 155.77 because the new frequency is narrow band and older scanners can’t be programmed with the extra digits. Regardless, you won’t have a problem hearing the new frequency.

This frequency was supposed to be their fireground but they decided to use it as their main frequency. Their old main frequency 154.13 is now going to be used as a secondary channel. It will be used as a backup when a fire occurs. Companies will stay on the primary channel (155.7675) for the fire and all other calls will be dispatched/operated on the secondary channel.

toughest decision I ever had to make
02/09/08 @ 08:22:18 pm, Categories: News, 545 words   English (US)

The day finally came. The day I dreaded. Today was the day I had to put down my dog. Terror, a black lab, gave me over 13 great years with unconditional love. He was my best buddy and I took him everywhere. We went for long walks, runs, rides and lots of swimming. A few years ago, he dislocated his left hip and developed arthritis. Since then, I could only take him for short rides because he couldn’t tolerate long ones. We still did things but not to the extent before his injury. Regardless, he was always wagging his tail and willing to go for a walk or ride. Always happy!

He was the most friendly and happiest dog I ever knew. He loved everyone and everything. He loved to play, swim, bark and most importantly, chew on his favorite toy which was a large yellow squeaky bone. The only thing he ever wanted from me or anybody that walked thru the door was more cookies. If you came to my house or if I brought him to yours, you had to give him a cookie. He wouldn’t leave you alone until you did. Every time I ate pasta or cooked eggs, he would go crazy! Those were his two favorite foods.

The past year he started to slow down. He started having much difficulty walking and getting up. I gave him glucosamine chondroitin tablets to help his joints and occasionally gave him anti inflammatory tablets when I noticed he was showing discomfort. As the year went on, his conditions worsened. A few weeks ago, he stopped using his right front paw which caused him to limp severely. I noticed a lump on the paw and took him to the vet. The vet stated it looked like a tumor and she put him on steroids to try help with his pain and maybe, with some chance, diminish the tumor. With Terrors age and condition, performing a biopsy wasn’t a choice. She felt strongly he wouldn’t make it thru anesthesia so using high dosages of steroids was our only option.

The first 2 or 3 days Terror did well. He showed more energy and started to use his front paw. The limp wasn’t so severe and he did get himself up. I thought this is the jump start he needed to be more functional. I was wrong. The next few days he only got worse and today, he couldn’t get up at all nor walk more than 2 steps only to collapse in pain.

I was hoping one day he would pass in his sleep naturally. I was afraid to make the final decision. I wanted him to be around longer but couldn’t watch him be in so much pain. It may have been selfish on my part to try and keep him around longer but I was scared of making the wrong decision to have him put down. I called the vet and told her what was happening and together, we decided it was time. Time to relieve Terror from pain and put him into a place where he can once again do what he enjoyed doing for over 13 years…. run, swim, play and be happy, which is the way I want to remember him. I miss him tremendously.

Banning handheld cell phone and text messaging
01/16/08 @ 11:07:57 am, Categories: News, 278 words   English (US)

In Massachusetts and Rhode Island, there is a bill in Legislation that will ban text messaging and talking on your cell phone unless its handsfree.

I am totally for this law being passed. I was in a traffic accident last January. A woman talking on her cell phone crossed the double line and broadsided me, putting me into a stone wall, totaling my truck. I was injured. A few weeks ago, a child was struck and killed by a kid text messaging while driving. There have been more and more accidents caused by cell phone use, it needs to be addressed. Obviously we can’t handle changing the radio station, drinking our coffee, smoking (for those that smoke) and using our cell phone at the same time. Talk about multitasking. I’ve seen people talking on their cell phone and smoking at the same time and no hands on the steering wheel!

We have enough distractions while driving. We don’t need more. I don’t care if your a beginner or have been driving for 20 years. There are more vehicles on the road than ever before. More pedestrians. You cannot concentrate on driving if your busy texting or talking on a cell phone. If a conversation is that important, pull over and talk!

I am guilty of doing it but I have also caught myself crossing the line or going thru a stop sign while on the phone. It scared the hell out of me. Now I won’t talk unless I have my handsfree piece set up or i’m pulled over. Still, I find myself distracted at times.

What are your thoughts on this??? I encourage people to voice their opinions.

Tough fight for Hopedale's Bravest
12/30/07 @ 06:49:50 pm, Categories: News, 117 words   English (US)

On Dec 27th, the Hopedale firefighters along with neighboring towns of Upton, Milford, Mendon and Uxbridge battled a stubborn and difficult fire on Hopedale St. The guys did a great job stopping the blaze from spreading into the front of the historic, large 2.5 sty Victorian home.

“stacked construction", additions and debris made their job difficult getting to the flames and it took extensive manpower and lots of ceiling pulling and wall openings to get to them.

However, after about 1hr of battling the fire from the inside, companies had to be withdrawn due to unsafe conditions and fight the blaze from the exterior. They finally knocked down the fire almost 2hrs after arrival of the 1st company.

New Fireground Frequency
12/30/07 @ 06:35:01 pm, Categories: News, 51 words   English (US)

Folks,

Woonsocket Fire Dept is now operating a fireground frequency. It is 155.7675 pl 136.5.

It is on a repeater and will be used when there are many incidents going on or when directed by fire alarm or an officer.

If anybody has new frequencies, feel free to add this to this post.
